About Mark Borckardt
Mark Borckardt is senior cataloger of U.S. coins at Heritage Auctions, having joined the firm in June 2004. He started attending coin shows and conventions as a dealer about 1970, and has been a full-time professional numismatist since 1980. Before coming to Heritage Auctions, Borckardt spent 15 years as senior numismatist for another major auction firm. He received the Early American Coppers Literary Award, and the Numismatic Literary Guild's Book of the Year Award, for the Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents, 1793-1814, published in 2000. He is a co-author of Million Dollar Nickels. He serves as a contributor to A Guide Book of United States Coins, and has contributed to other references, including the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Sylloge, and the Encyclopedia of Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States. Borckardt is a life member of the American Numismatic Association, and an active member of several other numismatic organizations. He joined Early American Coppers in 1973, and today serves at the group's national historian. Borckardt was a participant at the 1996 American Numismatic Society Coinage of the America's Conference on large cents. Borckardt is an avid bowler and a member of the board of director's of the Dallas USBC Bowling Association. He has several 300 games and a high three-game series of 866. He is a 1980 graduate of Findlay College (today, University of Findlay) in Ohio with a degree in mathematics. He is also an avid genealogist, and has traced his family back for 13 generations in America, beginning with Penelope Prince of New Jersey, his 11th great grandmother. Borckardt and his wife, Mary, were married in 1980 and today have three children, Mathew, Michelle, and Melissa.
